Buyer’s Guide

Now that you’ve got more of an idea of what lightweight vacuums are actually out there we thought we’d go into greater detail about the variations that you should consider when thinking about buying a lightweight vacuum.

Although all of the vacuums we’ve reviewed are lightweight vacuums, there can be some of a difference between the lightest and heaviest lightweight vacuums. Of course, everyone’s needs can be different, and a lightweight vacuum to one person can be quite heavy to another. The weight of these vacuums can be found anywhere between an ultra-lightweight of 4.4lbs. and 22lbs. with the average being around 5kg. They all come with pros and cons and while the 5lbs.

vacuums may be lighter to carry around, it doesn’t mean they will be the best cleaner. You may find that the heavy lightweight vacuums have more motor power which means they actually pick up more. Or some people prefer something on the heavier side as otherwise, they might feel the product is a bit flimsy without a sturdy grip. Fortunately, as we’ve discussed, with lightweight vacuums ranging from 2 – 10kgs you’ll definitely find something out there for you.

Stick vs. Canister

Throughout this article, we’ve spoken about stick and canister vacuums, but we haven’t really gone into too much detail about the benefits of each. The most obvious is that a stick is usually designed that way so it is detachable which allows the vacuum to become a handheld vacuum, this is useful but not always necessary. However, canister vacuums are usually sturdy and are very popular with large family households. The canister type of vacuum are known for their durability and strong suction power but are usually on the larger side.

Although as we’ve shown throughout this article, they can still be lightweight. Think you can’t get to a hard to reach cleaning spot with a canister, think again! With a canister design, because the motor and the canister are kept separate, you can’t detach the main body like with a stick vacuum. However, canister vacuums usually have great tools for cleaning the harder to reach places that the vacuum itself can’t. For example, you can easily stretch wand like tools from the vacuum to reach ceilings and drapes, etc.

This means the canister vacuums are often highly practical and versatile. When it comes to stick vacuums, they are usually much lighter averaging at around 6 lbs. on average this means they are generally great for those living alone, short on space, unable to carry heavy weights and the elderly. With stick vacuums, you will find both the motor and the capacity bin in the same place with an additional tool included with it which can transform this machine from handheld to a vacuum.

As you may have guessed to turn this portable machine into a proper vacuum, it plugs it into a sturdy stick. What’s great about the stick vacuums is that they are often a lot quieter.

Corded vs. Cordless

Most lightweight vacuums do tend to be cordless, but you can find some lightweight corded vacuums too. There are definitely some great benefits when it comes to cordless vacuums as they do provide some extra mobility which makes them easier to carry around especially upstairs in the smallest of nooks and crannies. But they do run on a battery life which will hinder you cleaning if you have a big house, they are usually less powerful and the majority of the time they don’t have a bag.

Of course when it comes to picking between the two it just entirely depends on your needs. If you have a small house and often vacuum your car, perhaps the cordless would suit you better. If you’re in a larger home and battery life would be an issue then it would make sense to get a corded stick vacuum over a cord-free stick vacuum.

Bagged vs. Non-Bagged

The next thing you would probably want to consider when looking at vacuums is whether or not their bagged or not bagged. Non-bagged vacuums do tend to hold more dirt, and when being emptied, they usually release less dirt back into your home. On the other hand, vacuum’s without bags work on filters which will you need to be replace more often than a bag, especially HEPA filters, but they do cost less. There’s a vacuum out there for you, it all just depends on your budget and what you would like to get out of your new product. Although it seems like choosing a bagged vacuum is an obvious choice given its hygiene benefits, however, we do think there are some disadvantages to a bagged vacuum.

As a lot of vacuum manufacturers have moved towards a non-bagged design over the years. Firstly, you need to buy more bags which is something you should consider when purchasing your vacuum as it will become an ongoing cost when you own a bagged vacuum.  Some models are very handy and tell you when you need to change your bag however some don’t so you may end up getting halfway through your vacuuming and need a new bag.

You should also consider that each vacuum model will require a different sized vacuum bag, therefore if you buy an old model you may find that stores no longer sell your size bag. Secondly, even if your bag is not completely full, you must always check how full your vacuum is because it can dramatically affect the performance of your vacuum. On the other hand, bagless vacuums are often easier to use, it’s as simple as that.

For instance, the ongoing cost will be a fraction of the price compared to a bagged model as you will only ever have to buy the odd filter which in comparison are pretty inexpensive. Secondly, they’re easy to use due to the fact they’re often made of a clear material which means you can see exactly how much dirt is inside your vacuum and when you should empty it.

When it comes to emptying your bagless vacuum although a few more dirt particles may escape when doing so, it usually is as simple as, one press of a button. A bonus feature of a bagless vacuum is that they are more eco-friendly since you’re not constantly having to buy bags and you can even pop your dust into a compost heap!

Hygiene / Allergy

Next when it comes down to hygiene you can find HEPA filters in both bagged, and non-bagged vacuums and these filters are great for stopping at least 98% of allergens escaping back into the air, However, in a non-bagged vacuum whoever empties the bin will still come in to contact with the dust allergens. Therefore, a non-bagged vacuum with HEPA filter may work fine for a household with some allergy surfers but if you need to take allergens seriously maybe you will decide to pick a bagged vacuum instead.

This is why you might want to choose a bagged vacuum instead for hygienic reasons bagged vacuums trap the dirt and dust inside the vacuum.

Expert Tip

If you have a bagged vacuum always make sure you replace the bag and fit it properly.

Did you know?

James Dyson invented the bagless vacuum cleaner in 1978, but it wasn’t until 1993 he made the Dual Cyclone dyson machine.
