This LEGO Technic set comes with an RC motor and controller so you can drive the finished product around remotely. It can move forward, backward, left and right and can make full 360 degree turns. It is a 2-in-1 set that can be built into either a regular tracked racer or a remote controlled off road vehicle. At 370 pieces, it may be challenging for younger children but is perfect to keep older kids occupied.

LEGO suggest this kit for 9-16 year olds, however many adult reviewers are also very pleased with the quality of the product. The tracked wheels mean the vehicle can be driven over a number of obstacles and it can travel up to 1.5 mph. Everything is included from the remote to the motor, however, it is necessary to buy both AAA and AA batteries for these to work.

Fully built, the tracked racer is 3 inches high, 8 inches long and 6 inches wide. As with all LEGO Technic sets, the pieces on this remote controlled driver are compatible with other Technic kits. It also comes with the 40th Anniversary LEGO Technic brick celebrating 40 years of the brand making it a great gift for collectors.

This LEGO Technic set is a must have for any sports car fans out there looking for a great collectors’ item. This kit mimics the actual build process of a Bugatti Chiron from the engine to chassis. The parts move just like in a real car - the engine, speed settings, gearbox, wheels and steering all have the ability to move and function like a real car. It is not electronic, so cannot be driven and controlled like the RC models, but it will look great once fully built.

At 3,599 pieces, LEGO recommends this kit entirely for adults over the age of 16. It is, of course, compatible with other LEGO Technic kits so it can be customized and combined with other models if you so wish. The high price point does mean this is probably best reserved for true sports car fans who have always dreamed of owning a Bugatti.

Even the interiors of the car are realistic, with a functioning dashboard and interior seating area. The rear wing can be controlled with the speed setting key, reminiscent of the real car! When constructed it measures around 5 inches high, 22 inches long and 9 inches wide.

For a great budget option to get kids introduced into the world of LEGO Technic, the WHACK! kit cannot be beat. Kids can construct a pull-back car that can then drive straight into obstacles and walls. Whenever the car crashes, the engine pops-out giving instant feedback and allowing the kid to perform some repair work as part of their play.

It is designed to be able to crash into obstacles, so the materials used are heavy duty and durable. It measures over 2 inches high, 6 inches long and 3 inches wide to give a decent sized model and only uses 135 pieces making it easy to build. LEGO recommend it for kids from 7-14, though we suggest it is best for kids at the younger end of this range.

This is of course compatible with all LEGO construction toy sets and is therefore a good additional gift for kids who already own and love their LEGO sets. There are no electrical components so no need for batteries - kids simply pull the car back and release to drive it. The tires are designed for racing, so this Lego Technic racing car is great for playing with other LEGO Technic vehicles.

This is another 2-in-1 kit and it can build two different Mercedes-Benz construction toy vehicles. A large motor is included to allow some of the moving functions to work. There is also a new pneumatic part included to give a more realistic movement to the construction toy arms. It has 2793 pieces and LEGO recommend it for the 11-15 year old range however we believe it is best for the younger end of this age range.

There is great attention to detail in this model with functioning doors, crane arm and grabber, tipper and tilting cab that reveals the engine. This is another great set for getting younger kids into LEGO Technic sets. Like the WHACK! kit it has a pull back motor making it easy for kids to use and play with when they have completed the model. It is suggested for ages 7-14 years by LEGO, and again we suggest it is best for the younger end of this range. See more gifts for 7 year old boys. The assembly instructions are simple and easy to understand by even very young children.

To use, kids simply pull the bike back and let it go to watch it go zooming ahead. It comes with a ramp which they can use to make the bike do stunts. It can also be combined with the Power Racer (model 42059) to create the larger combi model.

It is a little smaller than the WHACK! kit so is better if you have less storage. Nevertheless, the parts are still quite heavy duty and should last even the roughest of plays as well as rough terrain. The technic street motorcycle is a very simple and easy to use kit ideal for a first LEGO Technic set.

This kit, another great one for younger kids, is very lightweight and easy to carry - encouraging imaginative play with the completed model. The rotors spin when pushed by hand, and some fan videos also claim you can add a powerful motor that can be purchased separately. It is suggested for kids from 8-14 years old and does take a little more work than the stunt bike. It can also be rebuilt into an Experimental Aircraft model.

LEGO Technic Sets Buyer’s Guide

What LEGO Technic set you choose to buy depends largely on the kind of person you are buying for. The beauty of LEGO Technic kits is that there isn’t really an upper age limit – they can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. That being said, some of the kits do have a lower age limit and these should be adhered to unless you are looking to buy a Technic LEGO building kit to build together.

lego-technic-image-2

These kits are great for building solo and will keep most people occupied for a few days – but they are also an excellent way to bond with kids if you are supervising them with the build. Here are some questions you should ask yourself before going ahead with the purchase.

What is the Person I’m Buying for Interested In?

It goes without saying that if they love racing cars – particularly a specific brand of car – you should buy them a Technic LEGO building kit that corresponds with this. If they are older, the model kits will be great but for young children, you should look at the racing cars that have pullback or even RC motors so they can play with their creations upon completion.

LEGO Technic has also built plenty of other kits for other interests. Is the person a budding sailor? There are boat kits. Do they like stunt shows? You can buy stunt bikes and monster truck style kits that often have moveable parts.

Have they Built Similar Models in the Past?

LEGO Technic kits are a lot more detailed than regular LEGO kits, so the larger kits will require a certain level of skill that regular LEGO kits do not. What’s more – they tend to cost a lot more, and you do not want to spend a lot of money on something that won’t be built.

If they are keen on building model kit sets already, then you should get them a more advanced building kit to challenge them further. If this is their first set, get one with less pieces. You can also check customer reviews to see how much effort it has taken others.

lego-technic-image-4

What is a Reasonable Budget?

If you’re buying for a young child, it makes sense to get the smaller kits not just because they are easier but because they are more cost appropriate. Some of the kits can cost hundreds of dollars and are a big investment. These kits are best reserved for adult fans and collectors who will appreciate the set a lot more and be more careful with the finished product.

How Customizable does the set need to Be?

All LEGO kits are somewhat customizable with other sets available on the market, but you may want to get something with more options if buying for a child. The 2-in-1 sets for kids are great as they allow kids to try building two different models, and usually the parts can also be repurposed into more imaginative projects more easily. You can also get kits which can be customized with electronic parts.

These are called power parts by LEGO Technic, and they help make the models move and increase the interactivity. These are great options for young children as they can play more with the construction toy after it is finished. Check out customer reviews and videos, as often people will comment if they were able to add these kinds of parts in after building and will give instruction booklets on how you can do it too.

Conclusion

LEGO Technic kits are a great step up from regular LEGO sets for kids. They are more detailed, are based on real-life building projects and can teach the user how the world works in terms of mechanics. When finding the perfect LEGO building kit you should first and foremost consider their age and construction ability.

lego-technic-image-3

There are kits for all skills levels, and regular LEGO builders will be best off starting with one of the more basic kits no matter what their age is. Other than that, consider their interests and then you can make the perfect purchase.

From Ferrari and Bugatti to yachts and garbage trucks – there’s something for everyone in the LEGO Technic range. This is a gift that is sure to put a smile on the recipients face, be they an adult or a child.

Expert Tip

A lot of the static models can be customized with the LEGO Technic Power pieces, even if the official description does not say so. Check out the reviews and online videos to see how doable this is.
