Buyers Guide

We have just shared our list of the ten best kids shampoos with you so that you can find out more information about the leading lines.  At the end of the day, however, it is still a very personal choice for both parent and child. Putting your childs’ needs at the forefront of your mind when choosing a new shampoo for them is essential, and there are multiple factors to bear in mind before switching your shampoo.  Here are some helpful pointers for you to make the best decision for your child, their hair, scalp and often body.

Sensitivity

We all have things in our lives that don’t particularly fill us or our bodies with joy and for some people that can be a lot more obvious and often more serious than it is for others.  For instance, you or your child could suffer from eczema, sensitive skin or allergies. If this is the case, it is essential that you make sure that the shampoo you are using or wanting to use has been classed as safe for use on sensitive skin.  It would be disastrous if rashes, itching, and reactions occurred through the use of the new shampoo when it could have been completely avoided.

Shampoos often make it very clear who their products are aimed at and then make it known what products they have used amplify the greatness of their product on that skin or hair type.  For dry, sensitive skin it would be great to look out for a shampoo which has soothing ingredients like jojoba, aloe or coconut oil. Shea butter is great for dry skin and itchy scalps.

For some children, certain, more fragrant ingredients will cause them problems.  These may not be chemicals or man-made ingredients but can natural. Sometimes the more potent, stronger natural ingredients can be harsher on the skin and can cause reactions, itching or exacerbate skin conditions.  A well-known example of this is lavender. Yes, it smells lovely, fresh and clean and it is a gender neutral fragrance for small children, but on very sensitive skin it is not worth compensating a wonderful scent for discomfort.  Make sure that your shampoo or shampoo-body wash combination is gentle on the skin, but be aware that the term “gentle” is not the same as “sensitive” or “dermatologically tested.”

Combos

Why not save time, money and effort by buying one bottle that does multiple things.  The most example of this is the shampoo and conditioner combination, but there are also shampoo and body wash combos, and even shampoo, conditioner, and body wash combined.  There will be fewer bottles around the bath, less pressure remembering what bottle does what, less chance of forgetting to pick more up at the store when something runs out and having one multi-purpose bottle make traveling with small children so much easier.  Your product of choice will specify exactly what it can be used for, clearly on the front of the bottle.

Specific purpose

Does your child have a particular hair or skin type?  If your child has sensitive skin, flaky scalp, curly hair, or a scalp prone to becoming greasy/oily fast, then it is really good to be aware that there are shampoos made specifically for each of these purposes and many more.  Some contain more moisture, some enrich the skin more, some remove sebum, some add oil, and some soothe the scalp. Whatever your child needs, there is a perfect solution!

Scent

There is nothing worse than not being able to shift a certain smell that you dislike and then realize that it is the product you have been bathing your child in or washing their hair with.  Be sure to check out what the natural product scents are when looking at a new shampoo, take the lid off and give it a sniff, or ask another parent what they use on their child’s hair if you discover a fragrance you love when around other children.  They won’t mind – it’s a compliment!

How to make slime with shampoo for kids?

There are lots of variations to this question, but our favorite approach is to take a bowl and pour 120ml of shampoo into it, remembering that the thicker the shampoo, the better the slime!  Add color or glitter if you so desire, then add 280g of corn starch to the bowl containing the shampoo and color/glitter. Keep adding a tablespoon of water until the slime has been kneaded to your desired consistency and texture.

What does “no tears” on kids shampoo mean?

Children and adults alike can all get shampoo in their eyes unintentionally, though it is more likely with children as they wriggle, play in the water and it can be difficult to aim water in very specific areas when washing shampoo out of their hair.  If bath time is often chaotic, there are multiple children or your child dislikes bath time, it could be because of a negative past experience with getting shampoo in their eyes. If this is the case, it is easily solved. Many shampoos are now considered to be tear-free which means that they will not sting, irritate or entice your child into scratching their eyes should shampoo end up in them.  This is due to the often used numb agent added to the formula. There will be no red eyes and no tears at bath time with tear-free shampoo, and if you’re in doubt, read the reviews from other parents or test it on yourself first. Fun bath toys can also really help.

When can kids use adult shampoo?

There is no right or wrong age to stop using a shampoo specifically designed for children and move on to adult shampoo.  It is completely up to you as the parent. It is advised to use particular shampoo on babies as has been proven as being safe shampoo for kids because their skin is so much more sensitive.

Often parents stop using children specific shampoo when the child is able to not get shampoo in their eyes so much or so frequently and when bath times become a bit easier / calmer.  This is because children’s shampoo often contains a numbing agent to stop the eyes from hurting, itching and reacting if the shampoo does go in them, whereas adult shampoo does not.

Parents also get fed up of buying multiple products, spending money when they don’t need to on unnecessary child-friendly products and don’t want to constantly have a bathroom filled with multiple bottles for no reason.  However, if your child has very sensitive skin, skin condition or eczema, it is advised to be extra careful when changing from child to adult shampoo, conditioner and body wash. However, remember if you do change over, it is not a finite thing – you can always go back to the child-friendly shampoo if the conclusion wasn’t the one you imagined.

Expert Tip:

Make sure you understand the difference between “sensitive,” “gentle” and “dermatologically tested” – they do not necessarily mean the same thing or have the same result.

Did you know?:

That all children produce sebum but in differing quantities.  The children that produce more sebum often have more oily hair which will get greasier and need more frequent washing.
