Buyer’s Guide

We’ve listed our top ten baby changing pads, but how do you decide which one is best? When choosing a new product for your infant, it can often feel overwhelming when you discover the vast quantities of information available to you as well as the variety and trustworthiness of resources. Be sure to highlight the most critical factors for you and your child. Changing your infant, especially in a public place, can often increase anxiety, so if there are specific elements that you know will make your life a little easier.

Then this is a perfect time to think about what would limit the challenges of diaper changing and make it less stressful for both of you. Currently, our children are too young to talk and give us their opinion, so we want to do what is right by them by making a well-educated decision. With technology and new creations evolving all the time, we think the best way for you to navigate your way through purchasing a new baby changing pad is by using the following features as a buying aid.

Safety

All parents and carers want their children to be safe. It goes without saying. Here we want to think about how well the changing pad will grip on to the surface it is required to stay on as we don’t want any sliding mishaps! If you regularly use a surface which is renowned for being slippy, purchasing a baby changing mat with ultra-grip technology would be really beneficial and would eliminate your anxiety making diaper changing a breeze.

changing-pad-image-1

Secondly, we must consider whether our child requires a changing pad to have contoured sides, more so for children who are prone to wriggle around a lot or are highly active and inquisitive. This again could prevent your child from rolling off the changing table pad, as the contoured sides or often high sides, keep your infant in a much more central position, easier for changing.

Lastly, would having a buckle function be of use if either your baby finds it impossible to keep still, or if you are highly anxious about them rolling off their mat.

Material

If the component makeup is essential to you, then you should consider this factor. This could be that you would personally find a more eco-friendly changing mat to be of preference or know that your child has frequent “accidents.” Therefore you want to make sure that the baby changing mat you choose is machine washable or would rather be able to wipe it down for speed, ease and the ability to always have your changing mat in play.

Alternatively, if you have a child who suffers from allergies or skin conditions, it would be good to consider mats made that are natural, organic and free from chemical, toxins, and vinyl. Hypoallergenic baby diaper changing pads are readily available, and you have multiple options to consider.

Size

Size could be something that is important to you if you have an active child, an older child who requires diaper changing facilities, or an infant who is much taller than average. None of these factors are limiting at all. There are long, extra-long, ultra-wide and many other ways to describe a portable changing pad. Every company will provide you with the measurements of their pads so that you can make the best decision for your individual child.

One size does not fit all, and we understand that not one single changing pad will either. Size is not just about how big the changing pad is for your infant, it’s also about how the size impacts you as the person who is having to carry it around. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the larger the diameter of the mat, the heavier it is, but it is something you should take into consideration.

changing-pad-image-4

You don’t want to buy a wonderfully wide pad, that’s really awkward for you to try and maneuver every time you go out.

Transportability

Is the ease of being able to transport your portable changing mat paramount in finding the best changing pad to fit in with you, your child and your lifestyle? If you’re a person who is always on the go, out and about or leads a busy lifestyle, then this is definitely something to consider. Do you want to be able to wear the changing pad as a bag, attach it to your stroller or keep it out of sight from everyone by being able to hide it away in a different bag somewhere else entirely?

This also raises the questions as to whether you want to be able to dispose of mats after they have been used or if you would like just to have one pad that you can use repeatedly. Finally, you must also consider whether it is important to you to be able to have the baby changing pad and all the extra supplies that your little one needs, all in one place and purposely together or whether you are happy with them being separate.

Some changing pads can be zipped on to a changing bag where extra diapers, creams, and wipes can be stored. Would this be useful to you? Or would you prefer to travel lighter if you are only going out for short periods of time?

Cleanliness

This is often the most important factor for parents when they are choosing a new portable changing pad. Public changing facilities often fill parents with dread, and they are adamant that they either want a pad they can wash easily, a pad that can be wiped with antibacterial wipes to make it sterile or they require the option of a disposable changing pad. No one likes the idea of bugs or bacteria, but it is very much a personal preference as to which option is the best way for you to keep your child healthy and there will definitely be one of these options which stands out as a clear front-runner for you. A humidifier for your baby can also help fight bugs.

This point leads into whether it is important for your changing pad to be waterproof or absorbent. There are of course plus points for each of these options. For example, some parents feel that they would rather have a waterproof pad as they would want to be able to wipe it down pre and post use with antibacterial wipes. This is perhaps the most hygienic, but it does mean that if an accident does occur, it will run everywhere and has a high chance of covering you and your little darling.

changing-pad-image-3

Alternatively, other parents would argue that an absorbent changing pad is better for them. This would mean that frequent washing would be needed, but it would also mean that any accidents were contained as the absorbent pad would soak up any mishap and prevent you both from being covered. However, this would mean that you would then be carrying around potentially unpleasant changing pad for the rest of your day out.

Choosing which is best out of these two options is very subjective to the user really it is all down to your personal preferences, want to wash even more frequently than you are already doing or if you are willing to risk a puddle on your own clothes. Due to these reasons, presumably, this is why many parents opt for a disposable changing pad.

These have the pros of the previously spoken about pads, as they are absorbent and sterile, but if a little accident did happen, then you wouldn’t have to carry the stained pad around with you any further.

If you have a child who is prone to mishaps, has a bowel or bladder issues, or even has a child with allergies, it could really be worthwhile thinking about going for the disposable changing pad option.

How to Secure Changing Pad to Dresser?

There are multiple ways for you to attach a changing pad to a dresser to make it safe. You can use big pieces of Velcro, found at your local store, and attach them to each corner of your changing pad with the conjunctive piece aligning to points on your dresser. Make sure that the Velcro is aligned on the dresser and changing pad. This is a simple, fast and cost-effective solution.

A more traditional method is using straps to keep your changing mat in place whilst also keeping your baby from rolling or falling, too. Make sure they have buckles on them to secure them in to place firmly and buckle them in the middle of the pad. If you are using a changing pad on a slippy surface, the addition of a non-slip mat could be the best option to make sure that the pad nor the child slides anywhere.

changing-pad-image-5

You can cut non-slip mats to the exact shape you need so any excess material will not get in your way or pulled by little hands. There is also the option of using sticky pads which can be stuck to a dresser or table. Just pull off the coating and press the exposed sticky patch into place. Make sure that if you notice your pad beginning to move, that you reattach new sticky pads before any accidents happen.

Expert Tip

For taller or older children, be sure to buy a longer and/or wider changing mat to make life easier for yourself.
