Among all the challenges that a new baby will bring to you, you can be certain that plenty of drool and spit-up will be involved. About 50% of babies will spit-up regularly after feeding your baby, leaving all of your tops unwearable. Unless you have a burp cloth, one designed to provide protection for your shoulder and back, one that’s soft enough for your baby, one that can be washed again and again (though who are we kidding? It’s best to have at least three of these things handy). So where do you look first when shopping for the perfect cloth?

Something like a regular dish towel is too abrasive for a newborn’s super sensitive skin, and it wouldn’t be designed to provide maximum absorbency. That’s why burping cloths are made with dense weaves, special panels, and ribbings, and with lengths almost two feet long to keep you and your clothes well-covered. These burp cloths to buy on Amazon are designed with your baby in mind while not skimping on protecting your favorite shirt—the one you’d like to be able to wear out of the house. You’ll get three burp cloths with this package by the Brooklyn Bamboo company who used bamboo fiber that was grown and harvested in an environmentally sustainable way.

Size

At 11.2 by 23.6 inches, they are over 2 inches wider and a ten of an inch longer than the aden + anais Burpy Bibs, making them the longest on our list, but not the widest.

Fabric

You might not think of comfort when you think of stalks of bamboo, but Brooklyn Bamboo has made the material into something soft, organic, and hypoallergenic (much like the organic, hypoallergenic cotton of the green sprouts Baby Muslin cloths above).

They are great for babies who have eczema or other irritations to their skin. They are very plain in design, only coming in white with thin, solid colors around the edges.

Durability

Bamboo fibers are much tougher than the cotton found in most cloths. The shape can be maintained even better and the softness lasts longer.

Buyers Guide

You want to keep your clothes safe, and above all you want to keep your baby safe. For your clothes, you want a cloth that’s wide enough and long enough, saving you from drips and drool. What the cloth is made of—is it thick enough? Absorbent enough?—is also a concern when you don’t want to risk any spit-up soaking straight through. Then you must question whether or not the cloth will hold up to washing and drying, or else you would risk it getting frayed and useless.

As for protecting the baby, you want a soft cloth, perhaps organic and hypoallergenic, that won’t irritate the baby’s extra tender skin, so you need to consider what the cloth is made of once again. All these factors—size, fabric, and durability—will be discussed in greater detail below.

baby-burp-image-3

Size

Right after feeding, a baby of a certain age will spit up about a teaspoon of liquid. This doesn’t seem like a lot, but it can and will go everywhere if you’re not prepared for it. The front of your shirt, the top of the shoulder, and the back all need to be covered as much as possible. A few cloths, like the ARNZION Baby Burp Cloths, the green sprouts Baby Muslins, and the aden + anais Burpy Bibs, are specially contoured in the middle to better shape themselves to the parent’s shoulder and neck.

Most, however, are rectangular and have an average of 14 inches in width and 20 inches in length. That’s a standard of 280 square inches of coverage. The cloth with the highest coverage is the Luvable Friends Baby Layered Flannel burp cloths with 14.5 by 20 inches (290 square inches). The smallest cloth is the Burt’s Bees Baby Organic Cloth at only 9 by 19 inches (171 square inches).

Fabric

Now that we’ve got size covered, we need a fabric that isn’t too thin. A large volume of spit-up would sink through a cloth that’s not at a proper thickness. That’s why these burp cloths to buy on Amazon are engineered to be super absorbent, though they’re still lightweight enough that they can be stuffed in a bag for cleanup on the go. Let’s first take a look at material: on the list above, you first have plenty of cloths that are 100% cotton with absolutely no synthetics.

One popular style of cotton is flannel burp cloths, a material that is about medium-weight and can be fluffy on one or both sides. Another cotton product is muslin. This fabric is far lighter than flannel burp cloths, so it’s more breathable and thinner, making it easier to fold up and store. Both are made to absorb as much liquid as possible while also being gentle on the child’s skin. The risk of cotton burp cloths is shrinkage in the dryer.

All of them can be washed and will soften up nicely, but drying them requires setting your drier to a very low setting or else letting them air-dry if you have the time. There’s one unusual material on our list that makes a great burping cloth that poses no risks when being machine dried: the bamboo fibers found in Brooklyn Bamboo’s baby products.

baby-burp-image-4

The fabric is tough enough that it won’t shrink or warp as fast as any cotton burp cloths will. So cotton and bamboo are both great for absorbency and reuse, but you also have to worry about the baby’s hypersensitive skin. The ten cloths above are all gentle enough, but what about the harmful pesticides that may have been used on the cotton or bamboo before it was harvested?

If this worries you, just take a look at Burt’s Bees Baby Organic Cloths, Brooklyn Bamboo Baby Cloths, and green sprouts Baby Muslins. All three of these are totally organic, while the latter two are hypoallergenic.

Durability

A baby will begin spitting up from the time they’re a few weeks old until they’re about 6 or 7 months old, though some will go on to do this until their first birthday. Peak spitting up season happens at about 4 months old. You need cloths that may have to endure these unseemly liquids for up to a year. While a pack of three only costs upwards of $10, you have a lot of other baby-related expenses: you can only hope you won’t have to add to that cost a few months down the road with another set of cloths.

Therefore, you need to consider that any cloth will fray, clump up, or shrink if it’s not washed and dried right or if it’s just not a quality-made cloth. It’s often hard to tell how certain cottons will react, whether they’ll immediately shrink or become misshapen in one cycle, but you can prevent fraying by looking for the cloths that have finished edges. Above, the Gerber cloths (specifically the unisex and baby girl’s cloths) both have them, making fraying the least of your concerns.

After purchase, your next line of defense is that you wash your cloths correctly. Wash them as you would any baby’s clothing: with cold water and a gentle cycle. Drying is another matter. Some, like the Gerber Birdseye 3-Ply Pre-fold Cloth Diapers, are incredibly fast-drying so that you can hang them up and wait it out. If time simply does not permit, just dry your cloths on the very lowest cycle and hope for the best. Overall, you’ll get many months of use if you follow these general rules.

What do you use for Burp Cloths?

To protect your baby’s skin, not just any fabric will do. The most tried and true by parents is pure cotton, weaved in different styles like flannel or muslin (some parents even use cotton cloth diapers). These are perfectly soft and sometimes have the added benefit of being organic or even hypoallergenic, so seek those out if you’re interested.

baby-burp-image-2

Bamboo is a more unconventional fabric that works just as well if not better than cotton burp cloths. Whatever you use, make sure it’s soft enough for the baby and thick enough to protect your own clothing.

How Many Burp Cloths do I Need?

Depending on the volume of spit up, you can get away with you using about 3 cloths per week, switching between washing them whenever you can. But that’s only if you’re lucky. You may want to get a pack of 5 cloths. Gerber Birdseye 3-Ply Prefold Cloth Diapers come in packs of 10, while Burt’s Bees Baby Organic Cloths come in a 5-pack, and many others come in a 3 or 4-pack. Having 2 or more cloths in your to-go bag is a good idea, should an emergency arrive.

How do you Make Burp Cloths out of Cloth Diapers?

There’s not a lot you need to do. In the case of using Gerber Birdseye 3-Ply Prefold Cloth Diapers, they’re ready to go once you’ve given them an initial wash and dry. But if you want to be a little fancy with a cloth that isn’t just a solid white, you can purchase some colorful cotton fat quarters (measuring 18 by 21 inches) and sew them onto the cloth diapers (it would work well with the Gerber Birdseye ones that are just an inch shorter).

Prewash everything, iron, and cut your fat quarters into thirds lengthwise. You can then center one of these on a diaper cloth, with the extra half inches in length sticking out from the top and bottom, to be sewed down around the other side after you’ve pinned everything. For the full, simple tutorial with plenty of photos and sewing know how.

Conclusion

Whether you’re the mom or the dad or a babysitter, you’ll have a lot of cleaning up to do, especially if you’re caring for a baby with a habit of spitting up long after they’ve eaten. So if you want to wash up drool, spit-up, or…something else…a good burping cloth can see you through some dark times. Once you learn of your baby’s possible allergies and sensitivities, you may have to go the organic or hypoallergenic route, unless you’d already prepped for that.

baby-burp-image

Once that’s figured out, you have to take care of your cloths so that they can withstand multiple bouts of spit-up and drool that will have to be washed and dried away. Be sure to wash and dry as gently as you can to make them last. Hopefully, you’ve got enough cloths stockpiled to last you through the first year with your new baby!

Expert Tip

There’s a lot you can do to make less spit-up happen: feed the baby as upright as you can, don’t let the baby get too hungry beforehand, and make sure the baby’s clothes and diaper are not too tight for starters. This can also be a symptom of acid reflux when burping.
