You can sterilize the feeding bottles yourself by boiling them in water for a few minutes, but this can take up a lot of time and effort. Thankfully there are many products on the market to make it more convenient. You will likely need a steam sterilizer – either electric or microwavable. There are new ultraviolet cleaners, but the cost of these outweighs the value of them.

We consulted experts, bloggers and customer reviews to find out what you need to know before buying a baby bottle sterilizer and what the best steam sterilizers are.

This microwave portable bottle sterilizer is Amazon’s Choice for bottle sterilizers. It is a great budget option compared to the electric steam sterilizers and can fit up to four bottles (though some reviewers have reported being able to fit more when the bottle is smaller). It only takes two minutes in the microwave to sterilize your bottles, breast pump parts, and pacifiers.

It is very lightweight, meaning you can take it if you are traveling with your baby. It may struggle to fit in small hotel room microwaves but will fit almost all home microwaves. You can also store the bottles inside the portable bottle sterilizer for up to 24 hours and be assured they will remain sterile.

Like most microwave sterilizers, it can be used with other brands of baby bottles but be aware it may hold fewer bottles if they are larger than the standard AVENT baby bottles. Philips AVENT is a trusted brand for baby accessories and provides a one year warranty with the product.

This baby bottle sterilizer and dryer machine can be plugged into the wall and left to sterilize. Like the microwave sterilizers, it uses steam, however, this steam is generated by the machine itself. The BallaBébé sterilizer is slightly cheaper than other electric steam sterilizers, so it’s a great option if you do not have a microwave but do not want to spend too much on a sterilizer. It also has a drying function, meaning you can use the bottles straight out of the sterilizer once it is finished drying the bottles.

This baby bottle sterilizer and dryer machine can fit up to eight baby bottles depending on brand and size, and can also be used on pacifiers and breast pump equipment. If you keep the lid closed, the bottles can be kept sterile for up to 24 hours. It does take a bit longer than some other sterilizers - either 40 or 60 minutes depending on how full the machine is.

This baby bottle sterilizer and dryer machine has been designed so the machine itself is easy to clean with various removable parts simplifying the sterilizing process. The machine has been approved by a number of quality authentication boards including the FDA in the US and RoHS in Europe.

For price and convenience, these bags can’t be beaten. All you do is put your bottles, pacifiers or breast pump equipment into a bag, add some water and put it into the microwave. Each box comes with five bags that can be reused up to 20 times, making them a very economical option for parents looking to keep their budget low.

These can fit anywhere between two and four bottles depending on the size of the bottle, so if you’re looking to do a bunch of bottles in one go you may have to opt for a larger microwave sterilizer. Users also suggest you leave the bag in the microwave for a further five to ten minutes after sterilizing so you can safely remove the bottles. These are an excellent option for traveling with, especially if you are staying in a hotel, as they will fit into small microwaves.

This microwave sterilizer is a great compact option for parents with little kitchen space. In as little as two minutes it can completely sterilize up to four bottles and two breast pump shields. It is intuitively designed with latches to prevent burns, a handle to carry it out of the microwave and lightweight materials. It will fit most standard microwaves, but as with other microwave sterilizers it may not fit in small hotel room microwaves.

There have been some issues reported with steam leaking from the bottom, so we suggest leaving the sterilizer to cool for a few minutes before removing. This portable bottle sterilizer will keep bottles sterilized for up to 24 hours if the lid is kept on.

Buyer’s Guide

When buying baby accessories there are two key factors – safety and cleanliness. You want to minimize the risk to your own and your baby’s health when using these products. Ultimately, however, there will be a few other factors influencing your decision when choosing a bottle sterilizer. A great way to check these is to read the review section as many of the manufacturers will not include this info in the description.

bottle-sterilizers-image-3

It is also worth considering how convenient you need the sterilizer to be – how much space do you have? Will you be traveling? Is it easy to clean? Here are some of the main things you should consider when purchasing a baby bottle sterilizer.

What it’s Made out Of?

Most microwave sterilizers are plastic, but you should make sure they use BPA free plastic. This is a necessity if you are using plastic bag sterilizers as they come into direct contact with the feeding bottles. This is not as important with electric sterilizers, but we still recommend checking to see if the plastic is BPA free. For other ideas on feeding your baby, see our review on our favorite baby food makers!

What Size is It?

If you have a small kitchen you will need to get something more compact. The microwave sterilizing bags are best for this as they can fold down, however, they are also disposable and will need to be replaced after a few uses. Some of the electric sterilizers are made in smaller designs to minimize how much space they take up on your worktop. If you are traveling, you will need a microwave sterilizer.

The bags are still best for flying with, but if you are driving to your destination and know you will have a good sized microwave it is probably better to take a plastic sterilizer. You will need a larger one if you go through a lot of feeding bottles in one day. Both electric and microwave sterilizers have larger sizes available – but you will need a big microwave for the large microwaveable ones.

Is it Easy to Clean?

Most of the microwave sterilizers are easy to clean. Simply wash them alongside your dishes in either the sink or the dishwasher (although you should double check it is dishwasher safe). For electric sterilizers, you want to make sure you can easily get into all of the components so you can clean up any scaling that might occur.

Many electric sterilizers have removable compartments making it easier to clean. You also need to check the reviews as some may be difficult to reach into.

How to use a Baby Bottle Sterilizer

How you use the sterilizer varies on what type you use. Almost all of them work using steam to sterilize the bottles and kill germs and bacteria. This steam reaches into every area of the baby bottle. Before using you should thoroughly clean your baby bottles. Any remaining breast milk residue will cloud up the sterilizer and will mean you have to clean the bottles again afterward.

bottle-sterilizers-image-2

Bag Microwave Sterilizers

For these, you simply place your bottles and accessories into the bag, add liquid as provided and place into the microwave for the suggested time. You should leave these to cool in the microwave before removing to make sure the bag is not damaged and you do not risk burning yourself.

Steam Shield Microwave Sterilizers

These are similar, but they are in the tub. You add the water to the base first, then place the bottles into their compartment. Sometimes there is a separate compartment for accessories, but if this isn’t the case you can easily keep them in the same space as the bottles. Place the lid on and microwave for the time given in the instructions. When you remove these we also suggest leaving them to sit before removing the lid to avoid burns.

Do not remove the lid until you are ready to use the bottles as most microwave sterilizers will keep the bottles sterile for 24 hours.

Electric Sterilizers

This varies depending on the model of the sterilizer. Generally, you put some water into the base, place the bottles and accessories into their compartment and pop the lid on. Most sterilizers have a single button or dial on the front which controls how they are used. If it has a drying function, also make sure you have activated this. Switch the machine on and let it sterilize.

Though you should definitely double check this, most sterilizers will automatically switch off once sterilization has finished. Remove the bottles when you need them for up to 24 hours for a regular sterilizer or 12 hours for a sterilizer with a drying function. We suggest using tongs if removing the bottles straight after sterilization to prevent scalding.

How to clean a Baby Bottle Sterilizer

Microwave steam shield sterilizers are easy – you simply wash them in the sink or dishwasher (if they are dishwasher safe) and then they are easy to use. As there are no electrical components you do not need to worry about them as much. For the bags, we suggest only hand washing. For electric bottle sterilizers, we suggest checking each of the components. Often the actual bottle container and lids can be hand washed or even put in the dishwasher.

You will need to regularly clean the heating plate as well to remove any scaling that will occur. To do this you clean the plate with a damp cloth or sponge, place some vinegar on it, and then clean again. You then need to put the sterilizer on a complete cycle without anything in it before it is ready to use again.

How long should I Microwave a Baby Bottle Sterilizer?

This depends on the model of the sterilizer and the strength of your microwave. Generally, you should microwave for two minutes for a high wattage microwave and five minutes for a low wattage microwave. Usually, the microwavable sterilizers have instructions. When in doubt, put it in for a little longer. The microwave sterilizers are designed to be completely safe in the microwave, and you want to make sure you have sterilized everything.

bottle-sterilizers-image-1

Conclusion

Bottle sterilizers are an excellent way to give you peace of mind over what your baby is drinking. They ensure that 99.9% of bacteria are killed and that your baby will only drink what is in the milk. Though there are a few things to consider, there are plenty of different options on the market. In general, we suggest having a look at how often you need to use it.

What space you have for the sterilizer and how much time you have to sterilize before pushing ahead with your purchase. These sterilizers can make your life a lot more convenient, but some of them (particularly the electric sterilizers) can be a bit pricey so it is definitely an investment over simply boiling your bottles.

Expert Tip

If you are buying a microwavable bottle sterilizer, measure the inside of your microwave with the plate in it before purchasing. You need to make sure the sterilizer can rotate for it to safely be able to sterilize the bottles. Read more in this study.
