Body hair can be a huge annoyance, regardless of how you look. It is not hard to make your facial hair (or even your chest hair) blend in with your personal style, but back hair will almost always look scruffy and out-of-place. A normal razor can trim it down and keep it short, but it is not easy to eliminate it completely, especially in the areas of your back that you can’t reach.

A dedicated back shaver makes this much easier and saves you plenty of time and effort in the long-run. Having a way of quickly and reliably shaving your back hair can leave you looking smooth, tidy and well-groomed whenever you are shirtless.

Here are ten of the best back shaver tools we were able to find, along with an explanation of their special features and other uses.

Back Shaver Buyer’s Guide

Buying razors and shavers are never easy, especially for your back. Unlike your face, you can’t just look in a mirror and shave your back that way, unless you have a very complicated setup in your bathroom. A lot of this shaving will take guesswork and estimates, so the more reliable and versatile your back shaver is, the easier it will be to cover everything without leaving patches of unwanted hair.

But how should you actually choose a shaver? There are certain features that are far more useful than others, especially in the context of shaving an area as big and varied as your back. Remember, not everybody has the same body type: a lot of back shavers are designed to deal with this, but not all of them.

Adjustability

One of the biggest positive points a razor can have is its flexibility and versatility, and being able to adjust the shaving length and angle is important. The more rigid and limited it is, the less likely you will be to cover everything. This isn’t always the case, but if you are shaving off all your back hair, even the smallest missed patch can really stand out when you are shirtless. For example, let’s say your shaver can’t extend far enough to reach the exact center of your back – this is one of the hardest places to shave, and it can often lead to people having a hairy patch there that they are not even aware of.

There are multiple ways that an average shaver can be adjusted. The first is quite obvious: the length. The longer a shaver is, the greater the reach it can have. This doesn’t mean that the length itself has to be adjustable, though: you can often find long shavers that have a grip surface up most of their body, letting you “adjust” it by holding it higher up or lower down the main shaft.

Another is the angle. It is sometimes easier to shave at an angle than try to stretch your arm to an awkward or uncomfortable position, and angled shavers can solve this problem really well. Some will be pre-angled, with the curve built into their design – this can be hard to get used to, but it is a very reliable and low-budget way of solving the problem. Others might have a free-form lockable hinge that gives you full control over the cutting angle you want. These are very easy to store and adjust, but it can sometimes be hard to reach the same cutting angle every time you want to shave your back, especially if nothing is labeled with angled measurements.

Blade Width

Unlike shaving your face, where a small blade helps you make tiny changes and sculpt your facial hair without leaving it imbalanced, a bigger blade makes shaving your back far easier. Not only can they catch spots you’d otherwise miss, but they also reduce the chance of the blade catching your skin or hurting you unexpectedly. They can even help you ‘overlap’ your cuts, ensuring that areas you’ve already shaved over can be trimmed down slightly more.

A blade that is too big will have obvious downsides: the larger it is, the harder it can be to use, and there is a certain point where the size will be too cumbersome for you to use reliably. If you aren’t careful, a wide blade might even be too large to get into spaces between muscles or your shoulder blades, depending on your body size, which can leave areas of hair in unusual places.

On the other hand, if a blade is too small, it will take a lot longer to shave your back. They are more likely to get into small spots, but this isn’t always practical, especially if you don’t have a very toned and defined back. It is also very easy to miss hairy spots with a small blade since you don’t have the wide coverage of something bigger.

Powered vs. Manual

Just like normal razors and shavers, a lot of people have a preference for either electrical or manual back shaver tools. There are benefits and drawbacks to each, a key one being the type of power and functionality they have. A shaver without electricity relies on your arm movements alone, rather than having the blade move or vibrate to speed up the shaving process. However, ones with power still need to be charged up or get fresh batteries, which isn’t practical for many people.

Unlike a toothbrush, which can have dramatically better results for many people if it is powered, you will be able to get the same shaving results with either. It mostly comes down to what you prefer best: manual shaving takes longer but has a more personal touch, whereas electric shaving is faster but will generally be less effective for really hairy areas.

Remember, you aren’t shaving just once – most people will have back hair that keeps re-growing, so you will want a shaver that you are comfortable using in the long-term. If you are not comfortable using a manual razor that could cut your skin, there is nothing wrong with an electric model. On the other hand, if you want full control over how your back shaver performs, a manual design is generally the better option for you, especially if you care about grooming more than the average person might.

Expert Tip

You don’t need to do everything yourself. If you have a partner, friend, or family member who is willing to help, you could always ask them to get a spot that you can’t reach. It is far easier than doing it on your own, as long as they are comfortable helping.

Did you know?

Shaving gels and creams don’t have to be a one-use option. If you’ve not removed all the hair from an area, it is a good idea to apply some more and shave from another direction.
